Motion: Forces at Work

Friday, April 17, 2015
5th Grade

What is work? Students learned how forces create motion, understand what work is, and discover what simple machines have in common and how they help us perform a large amount of work with minimal force. Students used mechanical advantage to turn a wheel and axle against a stronger opponent, haul their classmates across the room using pulleys, and found out if they could lift a teacher using a giant lever. Thank you, Mrs. Casi for your bravery!

Lyn Littlefield Hoopes: Poetry Workshop

Tuesday, March 10, 2015
Wednesday, March 11, 2015
2nd Grade

Ms. Hoopes began by sharing a few of her poems and their inspiration. The students collaborated to create a class poem, learning strategies for brainstorming, imagining and structuring a poem. The students wrote their own poems inspired by photos Ms. Hoopes has taken in nature — moments of spring captured in creatures just outside her door — hummingbirds, snails, snakes, toads, butterflies, chipmunks, robins eggs and more! It was a morning well-spent being creative!

Wednesday, November 5, 2014
4th – 6th Grade

The NBSO Education Director, Terry Wolkowics and three musicians, Emmy, Peter and Laura came to both OHS and Center School top present the program Creative Contrasts. This hilarious and talented team explored the concept of contrast through classical music, photography, poems for two voices, literature and grammar — centering around three central contrast themes: Contrasts in Number, Contrasts in Motion, and Contrasts in Light and Tone. This program was a delight to students and staff alike!

Geology: Rock Detectives

Monday, October 6, 2014
4th Grade

In this workshop, the MOSB presenter, Emily, guided our 4th grade students through the exploration of different types of rocks and how they form over geologic time. Working as a team, students identified various rocks and minerals using hands-on observations and experiments. For a finale, they figure out how a particular rock formation has changed over millions of years.
